Fairtrade

fairtrade_mark.jpgIn February 2007, Liverpool Hope University was awarded Fairtrade university status in recognition of its work towards promoting the sale and consumption of fairly traded goods on its campuses. What does this mean?

  • We sell as many Fairtrade products as we can.  Fairly traded tea and coffee are available all over the university and are served as the default option at all internal meetings and events.  A range of Fairtrade food is also available at all the catering outlets on our campuses.
  • We promote trade justice.  We encourage people to choose Fairtrade and raise awareness about issues of trade justice by displaying promotional material and information.  We continue to think of new ways to support ethical companies and seek to meet our needs as consumers by giving the third world a fair deal.
  • We make an effort every year during Fairtrade Fortnight to campaign for trade justice and increase our consumption of fairly traded and ethical goods.

 Why?

  • Liverpool Hope is an ecumenical Christian university.  Our faith commits us to the Gospel values of caring for our neighbours, seeking justice for the oppressed and working for the equality and dignity of all people.  In our commercial life, this translates into wholeheartedly supporting companies that enable producers to secure a decent standard of living.

“I don't preach a social gospel; I preach the Gospel, period. The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ is concerned for the whole person. When people were hungry, Jesus didn't say, "Now is that political or social?" He said, "I feed you." Because the good news to a hungry person is bread.”  Desmond Tutu

What do we sell?

  • Coffee
