News: Liverpool Hope University is delighted to announce that Global Hope has been selected as one of the Lord Mayor's charities for 2009/10.

History

Liverpool Hope University has a long tradition of global educational development work, providing opportunities for students and staff to share skills and knowledge with partner institutions overseas. It started with the opening of the World Development Studies Centre in the early 1980s; the first feasibility studies took place in Africa, South America and Mexico in 1982.  The first student placement was in Mexico, 1983.  The vision of this work was to raise awareness of global problems through the active engagement with issues in the developing world by facilitating educational workshops led by Liverpool Hope University staff and supported by students.  The continuation of the work led to the formation of a committed group of staff and students who oversaw and co-ordinated projects under a series of names, firstly the Third World Development Group, then Hope One World, but more recently the activity has been re-launched as Global Hope.  Since its inception, the charity has grown to embrace working with a variety of partners across the globe in places as diverse as India, Malawi, South Africa, Nigeria, Uganda, Sri Lanka, Romania and Brazil.

Partnerships

SOS Children's Villages UK

Global Hope has a longstanding and successful partnership with the charity SOS Children's Villages UK.  Teams of staff and students deliver educational development workshops in various SOS locations in India, Sri Lanka and Malawi.  The locations have amazing facilities: kindergartens, schools, youth hostels, health centres and vocational centres as well as homes for the orphaned or abandoned children.  The communities surrounding the SOS locations also have full access to the services provided. The volunteers are put up in guest houses within the SOS community so that they can integrate at all times, thus enriching the experience on both sides.  The partnership began with a student, Paddi Pearson-New having visited Ladakh, a region in a remote part of Northern India, home to Tibetan communities.  She recognized the essential need for educational support and after speaking with Hope staff, a feasibility visit was undertaken.  This resulted in a proposal to deliver English, Maths, Science and Education workshops to Tibetan and Indian communities with financial assistance provided by SOS Children's Villages and the university and fund raisinig by staff and students.  Liverpool Hope University has continued to work with Tibetan and Indian communities through SOS Children's Villages UK and in 1996 received the Queen's Anniversary Prize in Higher Education.  Approximately 2,000 teachers and trainee teachers along with 20,000 pupils have benefitted from the support of Global Hope.

Sisters of Notre Dame, Nigeria and Bangalore

Global Hope also has a strong partnership with the Sisters of Notre Dame teacher training colleges in Banagalore, India and Akure, Nigeria.  The Sisters of Notre Dame was a founding college of the university in 1844.

VMM and Mountains of the Moon University, Uganda

Hope's support of the charity VMM has brought about a recent partnership with the Mountains of the Moon University (MMU) in Fort Portal, Uganda.  This project has more recently been financially supported by Liverpool Hope University's Career Development department, thus a careers element has been integrated into the educational exchange.  Hope and MMU students shadow each other whilst delivering teaching practise in partner schools of MMU.  In the evenings, Hope students carry out educational support work with children living with HIV in the Manna Rescue Home, also in Fort Portal.  In Kamapala, the students support street children projects by providing educational and cultural exchange sessions.

The Big Hope June 2008

Liverpool Hope University celebrated Liverpool's status as European Capital of Culture 2008 by hosting The Big Hope Global Youth Congress attended by over 1,000 delegates from 55 countries.  It was a joy to see many of Global Hope's colleagues from partner institutions in India, South Africa, Malawi, Nigeria, Uganda and Brazil.  The programme provided an impressive lecture series with internationally renowned speakers, associated discussion fora and the opportunity to participate in social events including sightseeing outings across Liverpool, Merseyside, the north west and beyond.
