Looking for Accommodation for the next academic year?
Liverpool has plenty of rented accommodation for students, so you do not need to rush into a decision too soon. The important thing is to be sure who you want to live with and where – if you think about these things in advance, you can start looking around and decide at leisure which room, hall or house to choose.
Staying in Liverpool Hope Halls
We have a limited number of rooms available to returning students, at St Julie’s Hall at Aigburth Park. We offer a great package with a discounted price, plus a free bus pass to April 2011.
We will contact you by email around late January/early February to ask if you are interested and will ask successful applicants to put their name on the waiting list at a later date. Please remember that this offer is time-limited as rooms get booked up very quickly, so if you are sure you want to stay in halls, don’t delay.
Looking for Private Accommodation?
We advise you to use Liverpool Student Homes to search for your accommodation as this is the most reliable way of finding a secure home with a reputable landlord. LSH is the official student housing agency set up by the 3 local universities and supported by the respective Student Unions.
LSH has an excellent website, run by StudentPad where you will find adverts for private houses and flats owned by registered landlords. There are three ways to view these adverts:
- By logging onto the LSH website at www.lsh.liv.ac.uk
- By visiting the LSH office to view the adverts
- By viewing the adverts within the Students Union at Hope Park – on advertised dates from the first week of February 2010 only
The LSH office is located at 140 Mount Pleasant, opposite the Catholic Cathedral
Five things to remember when searching for accommodation:
- Do not panic into signing a contract with a private landlord even if they claim that there is a queue of people waiting to sign up for the same room. If you have any doubts at all, wait and have a look around – there are usually plenty of rooms left well into April and May and limited choices are available right up to August. Remember – once you have signed you are legally bound to pay for the room, even if you don’t move in.
- The earlier you sign for your accommodation, the more chance you have of experiencing problems. By the summer you may have changed your mind about who you want to live with and be stuck with a group of people you no longer like. If you do not want to commit living with a particular group of people, consider moving to an en-suite room in one of the private halls – they have the advantage of being all inclusive, so there are no additional bills to pay
- Remember that landlords who register properties with LSH must sign up to the Code of Practice, which offers you a high degree of protection and a complaints procedure in case anything goes wrong. For this reason it is advisable to only consider landlords who have registered with LSH - do not be fooled by other companies with “Student Homes” in the title – Liverpool Student Homes is the only official student housing agency in the city.
- All main Halls are registered with LSH and their tenants are also protected by the LSH Code, even if they book with the owners directly. If you are unsure whether a Hall is registered with LSH, check the website at www.lsh.liv.ac.uk Many Halls will offer incentives to encourage you book early but there may be even better deals on offer later on the summer - as there have been in previous years
- Do not settle for poor quality accommodation. If there is any aspect of a property that you are not happy with, walk away and keep looking until you find the right one. Do not take a property on the promise of work being completed ‘by the time you move in’.
