2010 - 2011 Seminars

This year's seminars have now ended. Please check our 'Previous events' page for a list of what happened, including links to audio files.

Philosophy and Ethics Reading Group

The Association runs a reading group at Liverpool Hope to discuss contemporary texts in philosophy and ethics. The group explores works concerned with concepts of the divine and religion; animality; the notion of the Other; and the categories of immanence, transcendence and materialism, particularly as these issues have been discussed by thinkers working in the Continental tradition of philosophy. Typically, the group will cover one chapter of the designated text at each meeting, raising questions and comments in response to the reading. While we wish to undertake serious examination of recent philosophical works, we hope to do so in an informal and relaxed atmosphere. During 2009 - 2010, we read Ethics: An Essay on Understanding Evil by Alain Badiou as well as Quentin Meillassoux's After Finitude

This year, we are reading Ray Brassier, Nihil Unbound. Enlightenment and Extinction (Palgrave MacMIllan, 2007)

The group meets at mutually agreed times term time in the main campus refectory. For further details contact one of the facilitators of the Association.
