DC Gadgets trade stand at Young Enterprise Competition 2013 Wednesday 20 March 2013

DC Gadgets

Throughout the 2012-2013 academic year, some of Liverpool Hope’s students took part in the Young Enterprise program. This program consisted of exploring students’ business ideas and developing their entrepreneurial minds. One of the groups that embarked on this adventure was DC Gadgets, whose business idea consisted of an invention. The members of DC Gadgets are James Laird who is the original inventor and Managing Director, and Onyinye Nancy Chukwuka who is the Chief Operating Executive.  James describes his experience of the Young Enterprise programme in the following account.

“My team was myself and Onyinye Chukwaka. Our company is DC Gadgets and our product was an invention of mine. The invention has now reached model level (both cardboard and plastic) and hopefully over the next year I will be able to distribute to the megastores. Young Enterprise is a friendly and welcoming environment, not only helping us but also teaching and working with us. Young Enterprise has given me confidence in my dreams and has been an amazing experience, one that I have proudly put on my CV.  As a direct consequence, I have been asked to talk in a school for the blind and partially sighted. I feel this is a great honour and would not have been picked if not for Young Enterprise.

“Young Enterprise is a fantastic opportunity to anyone with an idea or an ambition. The programme supports anyone and everyone’s dreams and tries to help them become a reality. From my first meeting with Sarah and Claire I felt like I was welcome and that my ambition was not only recognised but praised. My team did not make it to the national finals but was one of the two that succeeded in reaching the regional finals.

“My dream is still alive and with the trade fair soon approaching, my company should have the funds available to start production of prototypes and mass production”.

James Laird - 20/03/2013
