DEVELOPING RESEARCH SUPPORT IN THE CENTRE FOR PEDAGOGY

Academic staff attached to the Centre for Pedagogy will create a community of scholarship and research which will support staff in their academic and professional development.

The Centre for Pedagogy within the Faculty of Education will serve two main aims:

  1. It will provide a framework for supporting staff (and doctoral students) in developing research related to pedagogy.
  2. It will bring coherence to the concept of relating academic practice to pedagogy and scholarship by providing shared skills, knowledge and information across the sectors of education, within and outside the Faculty.

The concept of Pedagogy being taken here is a very broad view, encompassing the nature of academic, professional and personal knowledge, as well as how those who educate and practise in a wide variety of educational settings.  It pays attention to different cultures and social settings and to the variety of thought and action which enhances communities and societies.

Research Aims of the Centre for Pedagogy

The research aims of the Centre will be to:  

  • support staff (and doctoral students) in producing research of national and international significance in the broad area of teaching and learning
  • disseminate research outcomes through presentations and publications in a variety of fora and media
  • act as a Centre for collaborative study and scholarship in pedagogy
  •  interact and form partnerships with public sector and other service providers and users in the advancement of education
  • provide a forum for the development of an interdisciplinary culture between academics, professionals and experts involved in teaching and learning
  • establish links with other institutions and individuals with the aim of promoting research and collaborative activity in pedagogy, broadly defined   

  

Academic Practice aims of the Centre for Pedagogy

The academic practice aims of the Centre will be to:

  • raise the academic staff profile in relation to learning and teaching
  • provide learning and teaching consultancy, as required
  • provide appropriate induction and professional teaching qualifications to academic staff (Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice and Masters in Academic Practice)
  • promote and champion learning and teaching enhancement
