What is our purpose?

p4261729_150_x_200.jpg

The aim of the Sand Dune and Shingle Network is to conserve sand dunes and shingle as dynamic landscapes

We set out to achieve this by

  • enthusing and encouraging people to value and understand the habitats more thoroughly
  • championing the habitats
  • facilitating an exchange of knowledge and support actions that are good for the habitats
  • making the Network an active community of participants and a recognised source of expertise and authority at a global level

We wish to build on the results of networking, highlight projects and publications and develop opportunities for study tours, workshops and cooperation.  The network also operates as part of a developing European network and works closely with the Coastal and Marine Union (EUCC). Who is involved?

network staff with students netherlands 2010.jpgThe network currently includes many of the following groups: site managers, national policy makers, students and researchers, biodiversity officers, ecologists, geomorphologists and hydrologists. We would also like to include members from different backgrounds - coastal engineers, golf course managers, tourism interests,  forestry interests, military sites, landscape historians etc. Our field meetings will always involve a cross-section of interests to encourage lively debate.

The network operates by sharing information across different sectors and disciplines. The common interest is the natural resource and a desire to find sustainable solutions to conservation issues. We encourage members to be active and to participate in discussions and field meetings but we also welcome passive members interested mainly in the newsletter and on-line resources.

We have over 150 full members and distribute the newsletter to about 300 contacts in the UK and worldwide.

  • Offers a service to Natural England with actions to support the conservation of sand dunes and shingle habitats;
  • Coordinates regional and national events on behalf of partner organisations;
  • Supports the sustainable management of links golf courses;
  • Publishes a regular newsletter and provides resources on the website;
  • Develops links with dune interests in Ireland, other European countries and worldwide;
  • Carries out research contracts for a range of statutory bodies.
