The UK lies within the Atlantic Biogeographical Region and thus shares common issues and common responsibilities for nature conservation with Ireland and the Atlantic coastal countries from northern Denmark to north-west Portugal. Management of the coast needs to be set in a wide context.  The Sand Dune and Shingle Network will develop international contacts as part of its aim to share experience between academics and practitioners.

This element of our work specifically supports the UK Sand Dune Habitat Action Plan action to promote the exchange of information on sand dune ecology and management among European states. The network is working with UK government agencies and European NGO’s to achieve this action.

The Sand Dune and Shingle Network is working closely with the Foundation for Integrated Coastal Dune Management and Research, based in the University of Amsterdam, and with The Coastal and Marine Union (EUCC) to develop a north west European coastal dune network . This will promote dune management in the Atlantic Biogeographical Region and other associated regions.

The UK sand dune and shingle network will continue to develop contacts with all coastal states in the Atlantic Biogeographical Region and develop its links to partners in the Baltic and Mediterranean areas.

Eurosite

The organisation Eurosite was founded in 1989 to manage the European Natural Sites Twinning Programme and this spirit of cooperation still thrives in all its work. Eurosite is a membership organisation and works with its members to deliver workshops, publications and management planning guidance.  Reports of recent workshops are published on the website.

The Eurosite workshop ‘Dune Habitat Management for Species Recovery’ was held on the Sefton Coast in October 1997.

We are currently updating this section and will shortly populate the 'Life Project' 'European Dune Network' and 'Global Network' pages.
