Roger McGough, Sunday 21st March, 19.30  

Roger McGough wrestles with mortality, seeks love in the launderette, perspires in the Foreign Legion, snaps Henri Cartier Bresson in Liverpool and jives in Macca’s trousers in his show 'That Awkward Age'. He shares the pain of Lord Godiva and Mr Nightingale, considers his Final Poem and shakes a fist at Alzheimer’s. Addresses, elegies, prayers & ever perceptive playfulness make this a must-see. Followed by book signing.

West Everton Children's Orchestra, Monday 22nd March, 13.00 

At Faith Primary School in West Everton, every child in the school is learning to play a string instrument, and every week they come together to form the 80-strong West Everton Children's Orchestra. The Orchestra is part of In Harmony Liverpool, a project offering free, intensive music lessons to children who might otherwise not have the opportunity to play.

Electro-Acousmatic Performance, Monday 22nd March, 19.30

An evening of pieces composed by Hope's music staff and students. Works to be performed include Manuella Blackburn's Vista Points, Introduction & Dissipation by Richard Lawrence and Robert Hartwell's Boatwash.

University Concert Band, Tuesday 23rd March, 19.30

Liverpool Hope University Concert Band was formed by Anne James in 2008 with the aim of bringing together a range of performers from within the University and the wider community. From small beginnings the band now comprises 35 players ranging from undergraduate and postgraduate students to members of staff (and even several children of staff), local music teachers and members of the wider local Liverpool community.

One of the aims of the band is to encourage members to develop their arranging, rehearsing and conducting skills.

Professor Rachel Cowgill's Inaugural Lecture, Wednesday 24th March, 17.30 

In her inaugral lecture, From Text to Cultural Practice: The Changing Objects of Musical Study, Professor Cowgill will demonstrate how the very accretions we have sought to expunge from the ‘texts’ of the ‘great works’ are evidence of a musical dialogue with genres and repertoires over time.  They are part of a history of musical ‘meaning-making’ that has the potential to enrich our relationship both with the works of the past and the generations of musicians and audiences who have engaged with them before us.

Music Students and Voices of Hope, Thursday 25th March, 13.05 

Hope musicians, including the Grace Notes string quartet, Voices of Hope choir and Opus 5 wind quintet, perform works by Mozart, Dowland, Strauss and Morley.

Milapfest Dances of India, Thursday 25th March, 19.30

Milapfest, the UKs Indian Arts Development Trust, celebrates its big move into the new Creative Campus with two brilliant dancers showcasing two of the most beautiful styles of Indian Classical Dance.  

Milapfest works nationally for the propagation of Indian arts through festivals, education, tours, commissions and two flagship South Asian Music Orchestras - Samyo and Tarang.

Joanna MacGregor, Friday 26th March, 19.00

Joanna MacGregor, Professor of Musical Performance at Liverpool Hope University, is thought of as one of the world’s most wide-ranging and innovative musicians, and has pursued a life connecting many genres of music defying categorizations. She has performed in over sixty countries, and performed with many of the world’s great orchestras (including New York Philharmonic, London and Sydney Symphony Orchestras, Netherlands Radio and Oslo Philharmonic and Chicago Symphony Orchestra) and eminent conductors (including Boulez, Davis and Rattle). Joanna has premiered several landmark compositions, from Harrison Birtwistle to John Adams and James MacMillan. Other collaborators have included Nitin Sawhney, Jin Xing’s Dance Theatre of Shanghai, jazz saxophonist Andy Sheppard, Brian Eno, Arabic singer Dhafer Youssef, and many others.

In this inaugral recital on the Capstone's new Steinway concert grand piano, Joanna will perform works by composers including Byrd, Chopin and Piazzolla.

Liverpool Philharmonic Youth and Training Choirs, Saturday 27th March, 19.30

The Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Choir is one of the North West’s finest youth choirs, offering young singers from the region exceptional choral training and performance experience.

The choir regularly performs with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir and has recorded with Aled Jones, been broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and appeared on television and at the BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall. The choir performed for the Phil’s Patron, HM Queen Elizabeth II on her visit to Philharmonic Hall in 2008.

The Liverpool Philharmonic Training Choir is an ensemble of aspiring young singers from across the region. The choir offers an excellent introduction to choral training through a wide range of enjoyable and exciting music and is delighted to be performing at The Capstone in its opening week.
