Frequently Asked Questions for Students Studying at The Cornerstone

Opening Hours

What time is the Cornerstone open?

The Cornerstone opens Monday to Friday in term time from 8am to 10pm and at weekends from 8am to 8pm. The building is closed to students on Bank Holidays and out of term time (unless special arrangements have been made and written permission has been granted by the Provost of the Cornerstone, Professor Bill Chambers)

When are Receptionists on duty and who are the receptionists?

The Receptionists, Lesley and Cheryl, are on duty Monday to Friday 8.30am – 5pm

When is the Refectory Open?

The Refectory opens between 8am – 6pm Monday to Friday during term time. After the food service in the Refectory closes the room remains open for private study and social use.  There are vending machines for snacks and drinks near COR 001 and COR 002

When is the Deanery Office open?

The office (COR 112) is open from 8.30am to 5pm Mondays to Fridays during term time. Coursework can be submitted from 9am to 4pm on these days. 

Transport and Parking

How do I get from Cornerstone to Hope Park by public transport?

The 78 bus runs from near the Dental Hospital (near the back of the Royal Liverpool Hospital) at ten past, half past and fifty minutes past the hour, starting at around 6am and ending around 6.50pm

The 79 bus runs from the same place to the Childwall Fiveways (a ten minute walk from Hope Park) at frequent intervals from 5.45am till midnight.

How do I get to Hope Park by University bus?

The University bus runs Monday to Friday (excluding Bank Holidays) during the following term dates:

Where do I park my car?

Secure parking can be arranged as follows:

Student 24/7 Parking

Parking can be arranged in the nearby Q Park on Prescot Street (near to the Royal Liverpool Hospital). There is a student parking offer which you can apply for which costs £12.50 per week and provides you with 24/7 access to the car park.

Special Hope University Arrangement with Q Park

In addition to the above the following reductions have been negotiated with Q Park. To avail yourself of the special prices the following must be carried out:

  • For options 1, 2, 3 and 4 you will need to go to Q-Park Liverpool with your Hope ID card and complete a registration form. It will cost £10 for your discount card.
  • Please do not leave this until the last minute or their system will not be able to cope with a sudden influx.

NB Because of the one-way system, you need to approach the Q-Park via Brunswick Road then Low Hill then Erskine Street (A580), turning left into Epworth Street. The car park is clearly visible.
If you arrive in the evening, the entrance of the Q-park may be closed, but if you simply drive up the ramp, the gates will open for you automatically.

Short Stays

If you are just planning to park for a short period of time, i.e. less than 5 hours, the following reductions have been negotiated with Q Park. To avail yourself of the special prices the following must be carried out:

  • You should park at Q Park as normal
  • You should collect a car parking voucher from the Cornerstone Reception
  • When you return to the car park and pay you should insert your voucher and the ticket to receive your reduced rate.

Computing, Printing, Copying and Learning Resources

Who should I see if I require IT help?

David Parry, The Cornerstone IT Officer is available in the Writing Studio – first floor under the Great Hall Balcony. Alternatively you can contact the IT Helpdesk on 0151 291 2100 or x.2100 from any internal Hope phone.


How do I re-credit my card for photocopying and printing?

There is a photocopy re-credit machine in the Main Lodge – you can place your card into the machine and insert money to place credit on your card.

There is a printer re-credit machine in the corridor area near to COR104. To re-credit your account, log in and insert money.

Where can I get a colour photocopy?

There is a colour photocopier situated to the left off the main reception area.

Where can I get a B&W photocopy?

Black and White copiers are available:
In the area to the left off the foyer
In the Writing Studio (at the back of the Great Hall)
On the Great Hall Balcony

Where are the computers at The Cornerstone?

There are four main computer areas:
The Atrium
COR104
The Great Hall balcony (entrance opposite COR 214)
The Writing Studio (under the Great Hall Balcony)

How do I print?

Printing Facilities are available in the four main computer areas:
The foyer
COR104
The Great Hall balcony
The Writing Studio (Black and White and Colour)

How do I order and return library books?

If you only study at the Cornerstone, Library books can be ordered through the web. To do this:

  • Log onto the Library web pages – www.hope.ac.uk/library
  • Go to Specifically for …. Cornerstone Staff and Students
  • Go to Special Services – Book Supply Service.
  • Fill in the Book Supply Request form and submit it.
  • You will be emailed by the library to advise of the availability of the text(s)
  • When the book is delivered to the Cornerstone Reception you will be informed by e-mail. The book should be collected within 6 days.
  • Whether you study wholly or partially at the Cornerstone, library books can be returned by using the Book Return Bin in the Reception Lodge

 

How do I access Wi-fi at the Cornerstone?

The wireless network is accessible in the foyer, Refectory and main IT areas, and you may find it accessible in other areas of the Cornerstone. You should connect to the wireless network named HOPE WIRELESS. You will need a Liverpool Hope username and password in order to access this wireless network. You may plug your laptop into a free power point only. Please do not unplug any equipment.


Rooms and Locations

How is the Cornerstone organised?

Rooms with odd numbers are situated on the left and ones with even numbers on the right side of the building. Rooms from 001 to 017 are situated on the Ground Floor. Rooms from 100 to 121 are on the first floor. Rooms from 200 to 214 are on the second floor.

Where is the Deanery Office?

The Deanery Office (where you will hand in your coursework, and make enquiries, is located in COR112 (on the first floor near to the lift)

How do I book a room?

You should check the room’s availability on the Hope website at http://timetable.hope.ac.uk/08/timetables1.htm

If the room appears to be free at the time you require it see the receptionist at the Cornerstone reception, who will request the room for you.

You should give two working days notice but should not book rooms over two weeks in advance.

The room booking will be confirmed or denied as soon as possible (within 24 hours) by e-mail.

Until the booking has been confirmed by e-mail do not assume you have use of the room requested.

What do I do if my swipe card is not working?

Your swipe card can usually be reactivated if it is not working by visiting the receptionist at the front desk at the Cornerstone.

If your card is broken it will cost £5 for a replacement – you should visit the IT Help Desk at the Sheppard Worlock Library at Hope Park to have it produced.

How can I find staff rooms, telephone numbers and e-mail addresses?

The best way to find staff information is via the Hope web site at https://ciphr.hope.ac.uk/comms.asp . You can also contact the Hope main phone number on 0151 291 3000.

 

Other Issues

What do I do in the event of an emergency?

Emergencies such as accidents or injuries should be reported immediately to the Reception Lodge staff. All lodge staff are first aid trained. All accidents are logged at the Reception Lodge. Similarly, thefts should also be reported to the Lodge.

In the event of a fire or a fire alarm you should calmly leave the building via the fire exits clearly labelled. You should not use the lift. You should report to the meeting point in Josephine Butler Square.

There is an emergency number (0151 291 3700 or internal extension 3700) which you can use to report an emergency situation.

How safe is The Cornerstone?

Whilst there are security cameras, swipe card doors and 24 hour Security staffing at the Cornerstone, students should be aware of the need to act responsibly to protect themselves and their property from danger and theft, particularly at the start of term.

As with all inner city areas in the UK you are advised to exert care on the streets and near cash points.

Where can I get cash?

You can get cash back of up to £50 if you make a purchase with your debit card in the Refectory of anything over the value of £2.50. There is also a cash machine at the Garage on Islington, although this charges a fee to withdraw cash.

How do I raise issues and concerns about the campus?

Each year group will have a student representative who will represent the interests and concerns of that group of students at staff student liaison meetings. Issues raised can relate to Catering, Domestic Services, the content of the Course, Cornerstone facilities or administrative arrangements – basically anything which affects your experience of studying here.

There is also a Cornerstone Operational Meeting which meets every two weeks on Thursdays at 11am.
