This evening’s Conductors and Composers

John Calloway
is an undergraduate at Hope studying for a music degree. He plays cornet in the band and he arranged the final piece in tonight’s concert.

Sean Chandler
is a PGCE secondary music trainee who studied music at Salford University. As well as focusing on trumpet performance he also studied conducting and brass band ensemble playing.  He hopes to take up a post as a secondary school music teacher upon completion of his PGCE course.

John Charlesworth
is woodwind teacher at Archbishop Blanch School, Liverpool. He studied music in Liverpool and has trained and directed various school and amateur bands and ensembles in the city. He plays mainly low-voiced wind instruments and composes and arranges music for groups with which he is associated.

Anne James
is a lecturer in Music Education at Liverpool Hope whose background is in secondary music teaching. She studied the clarinet at the Royal College of Music and was a woodwind teacher before entering the classroom.  She has always had a keen interest in wind band music and also plays in local orchestras and directs the University Gospel Choir.

Aileen McCann
gained a music degree from Queens University Belfast and is now a secondary music trainee on the PGCE course at Hope. She plays the clarinet and saxophone and enjoys singing.

Fergus Mulcahy
gained a music degree from the Open University and is now also a secondary music trainee on the PGCE course at Hope. He plays trombone in the band and is fond of all music but particularly jazz. His composition tonight is an arrangement for the band of his previous orchestral piece of the same name which was first performed by the Guildford University Orchestra in 1993.

The University Concert Band

The band was formed by Anne James in 2008 with the aim of bringing together a range of performers from within the university and the wider community.
From small beginnings the band now comprises 35 players ranging from undergraduate and post-graduate students to members of staff (and even several children of staff), local music teachers and members of the wider Liverpool community.
One of the aims of the band is to encourage members to develop their arranging, rehearsing and conducting skills.
