At Liverpool Hope University, on the premise that society is defined by culture and culture by society, the subject of Disability Studies is pertaining more and more to cultural as well as social issues. We are not only interested in the policies and prejudice around disability but also its representation in literature, media, film, art and so on. The meaning of disability may be influenced by experiential knowledge imparted in autobiography and biography, or by attitudes reflected and indeed constructed in fiction and mythology, or by the ableist bias of history, or by education and social policy, or by research and progress in the social and medical sciences, or perhaps by all of these things. Disability is therefore every bit as relevant to Education and the Arts and Humanities as it is to the Social Sciences. On this basis we are establishing the Centre for Culture and Disability Studies (CfCDS) with a growing array of internationally recognised publications, research projects, events, courses, networks, and affiliations. The CfCDS aims to encourage and engage in regionally, nationally, and internationally recognised research, teaching, and research-informed teaching that come under the rubric of Cultural Disability Studies. Please visit CfCDS's web site (http://ccds.hope.ac.uk) for more information on its current research projects and the Journal of Literary & Cultural Disability Studies. Contact Us
