A Centre for International and Development Education was established in 2010 to support and enhance the work of the Faculty of Education, and in particular to provide a framework for supporting staff (and doctoral students) in developing research in this increasingly important area. The concept of International and Development Education being taken here is very broad view, taking account of all aspects of international education and of “Development Education” and its relationship to developing countries. It pays attention to different cultures and social settings and to the variety of thought and action which enhances communities and societies in the UK and abroad. The Centre for International and Development Education will act as a forum for the academic work of the Faculty in this area. It will also give a focal point for some work with the Institute of Education and Society, jointly operating with St Xavier’s College, Mumbai.
The Centre for International and Development Education is guided by the vision of the Faculty to develop educational thought and practices which promote education as a humanising influence on individuals and on society locally, nationally and internationally. We are passionate about multi-disciplinary research and teaching that teaching challenges social injustice, that is globally sensitive and that contributes to the development of society through education. In its first year, the Centre for International and Development Education will develop the Faculty's expertise and research output based around the following themes:
In 2010-11, new collaborative projects include a publication on 'Ethics of the Research Process in diverse cultural contexts' led by Dr Wendy Bignold drawing contributions from members of the CfIDE. This is to be published as part of the Liverpool Hope Studies in Ethics Series edited by Associate Professor David Torevell. As part of the 'global learning and develpment education' theme, Jan Rowe is leading a group of staff investigating the impact of international placements on professional identity.
The CfIDE is currently completing a 3 year project funded by the Department for International Development. this project, worth £186,551 has embedded a global dimension and active global citizenship in the cirriculum at Liverpool Hope University. As part of this project, a team of tutors led by Phil Bamber, Andrea Bullivant and Di Stead have developed an inventory to measure attitudes to global learning that is now being used by Lancashire Clobal Education Centre, Manchester Metropolitan University and South Yorkshire Development Education Centre to evaluate their work.
The dynamic relationship between research and teaching presents excellent opportunities for us to realise our goals. The work of the Centre for International Development Education informs and is formed by a broad range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses across the Faculty of Education including BA (Hons) Childhood and Youth Studies, Education Studies, BAQTS (Hons), PGCE Primary, PGCE Secondary, MA Education [International Perspectives], MA Education [Childhood and Youth], and the Masters in Teaching and Learning (MTL). Members of the CfIDE work with a number of partners in the UK and overseas including the Liverpool World Centre, England and St. Xavier's College, Mumbai.
