In recent years, funding for scientific research has been progressively directed toward that which shows societal impact, or has is explicitly designed to have a measurable impact on society.
However, some of the most outstanding scientific discoveries which have had significant impact on our society were the result of curiosity or “Blue Sky” scientific research, without any regard at the time for it application in our daily lives. This Foundation Hour will highlight a number of such scientific discoveries and question the policy of impact-led research funding.
