Exercise is Medicine: how ‘Exercise Science’ research has responded to and impacted upon society

Starts: Wednesday, 28 February 2018

Dr Denise Roche, Senior Lecturer in Exercise Physiology, Liverpool Hope University

Since ancient times, the value of exercise for the promotion for health and the prevention of disease has been understood, with Hippocrates himself (460-370 B.C.) writing ‘Eating alone will not keep a man well; he must also take exercise’. This Foundation Hour presentation will seek to evaluate the statement ‘Exercise is Medicine’. It will review some of the key discoveries from the field of exercise science including the elucidation of the adaptive physiological responses to acute and chronic exercise from a molecular, biochemical, structural and physiological perspective. It will explore how the emergence of physical inactivity in society and global trends in chronic disease have driven the research agenda in exercise science and how scientific research in this field is changing international guidelines, informing policies and impacting upon society.
