Using visual perception research to improve the public's detection of threats: a case study in building impact

Wednesday, 3 October 2018 , 4pm
Hope Park Sports 106

Professor Nick Donnelly, Liverpool Hope University

In recent years, my colleagues and I have explored factors that influence the speed and accuracy of the detection of targets in
visual search tasks. The factors explored in these experiments include the certainty of target identity (i.e. the dual-target cost)
and target prevalence. In this talk I will describe some of these experiments and their relevance to understanding visual search
in the real world. One example I will describe is the detection of threats in x-ray images of baggage. I will end by describing some work we are conducting to try and enhance the public’s detection of threats.
