Matt Simpson memorial reading

Monday, 25 February 2019 , 5.00pm for 5.30pm start
The Eden Arbour Room

In partnership with The Windows Project.

We are delighted to welcome LIZ BERRY whose poetry reflects Matt Simpson's own concerns with place and community.

Liz Berry's debut collection Black Country (Chatto 2014) was a Poetry Book Society Recommendation, received a Somerset Maugham Award and won the Geoffrey Faber Memorial Award and Forward Prize for Best First Collection 2014. Her pamphlet The Republic of Motherhood (Chatto, 2018) was a Poetry Book Society Pamphlet choice, shortlisted for The Michael Marks Awards and the title poem won the Forward Prize for Best Single Poem 2018.

Berry’s work is recognisable for its distinctive usage of Black Country dialect and vocabulary, a regional foregrounding which remains unusual among her generation of British poets. Her poems often draw on the folkloric dimensions of animals and places, and are unafraid of performing the magical realist trick of discovering the supernatural or otherworldly in more prosaic settings.

Light Refreshments. Admission FREE.
