The rights of Britain's imperial citizens: lessons from Mauritius, 1832-1844

Wednesday, 13 February 2019 , 12pm
EDEN104

Speaker: Zaki Nahaboo

The relationship between citizenship and British colonial subjecthood is commonly understood as mutually exclusive. This talk explores another dimension to their relationship by avoiding the anachronisms of postcolonial nationalist historiography. It argues that Rémy Ollier's activism exhibited one of the earliest attempts by a racialized subject to explicitly claim rights within, rather than against, the British Empire.
