Both the city of Liverpool and the wider Merseyside and North West region are ideal locations for fieldwork. Many modules include day visits to local sites for field-based learning. The city of Liverpool has undergone an astonishing revival over the past two decades. It has re-established itself as an important commercial and cultural centre and is currently gearing up to become the European Capital of Culture in 2008. In many ways it is a textbook study of contemporary urban regeneration.
-The Albert Dock, part of Liverpool’s World Heritage Site Liverpool is surrounded by internationally important coastal sites. The Mersey Estuary has extensive mudflats and saltmarshes vital for resident and migrant species, especially wading birds and wildfowl. To the north of Liverpool, the Sefton Coast is one of the largest and most important sand dune systems in Britain, with wild, dune landscapes and a high biodiversity including a number of very rare and specialist species.

Like Liverpool, Manchester is a renowned example of urban regeneration. There are also three national parks - the Peak District, Snowdonia and the Lake District – within a day visit from Liverpool.

- Fieldwork in the Peak District National Park Students studying Tourism and Leisure also take part in local field visits. These include a trip to the Trafford Centre which includes a behind the scenes tour and a presentation from the centre’s management. This is appreciated by students, not only as an opportunity to relate theory to practice but also as an opportunity for some Christmas shopping! There are also visits to commercial sector leisure facilities including theme parks.
