Students analysing samples This course is relevant to all who are interested in understanding or managing the environment, allowing them to become skilled, informed, professional contributors to a sustainable future. The Rio Earth Summit in 1992 promoted an increase of activity and international directives, many with particular relevance to the management of the environment, that have led to increasing demands on national and local authorities to ensure compliance with the legislation. This has lead to a rise in the demand for environmental professionals in public, private and voluntary sectors. This course will equip you with the skills and knowledge to respond to this demand, and in addition you will develop postgraduate qualities such as innovative thinking and practice, responsibility for continuing personal and professional development,  decision-making and awareness of ethical dimensions.

The course reviews important concepts, principles and procedures in environmental management and develops skills and techniques appropriate for postgraduate research and practical work. Students are able to develop particular expertise of sustainability in practice within the areas of nature conservation, urban change and coastal management through the optional units.

Fieldwork makes use of the many opportunities provided by the environments in northwest England, including Liverpool which will be European capital of culture in 2008 and the internationally important Sefton Coast Sand dune System. The location of residential fieldwork may vary; our own field centre in the Snowdonia National Park is a very useful base for habitat survey and management work.

Evening, weekend and residential fieldwork sessions, work-based learning, plus individual tutorials that can be arranged at students’ convenience, provides diverse learning experiences and also flexibility to suit both full- and part-time students.
