The Cost of War

The First International Conference of the Desmond Tutu Centre for War and Peace: June 17-19, 2009, Liverpool Hope University Campus.

Overview:

This conference addressed the costs of war.  These have never before been assembled in such full scope, across so many disciplines, or from so many perspectives. Still less have they been effectively communicated to the international community.  They are especially vivid in the Middle East but they also strongly affect governments, military command structures, and individual soldiers around the world.  They are nonetheless ineffectively remembered and have not tended to guide future government policy or action effectively.

As many of the addresses illustrated, the costs do not simply add; they multiply, as individual costs exacerbate each other in a vicious circle that can yield outcomes as unpredictable as they are explosive.  See Conference Programme for full details.
