Welcome to the Institute for Social Work and Social Justice

The Institute draws together the research work and interests of colleagues in the Department of Social Work, Care and Justice. The Institute includes colleagues undertaking a range of research topics linked together by a commitment to social justice. This motivating ‘mission’ operates in two senses. First, the research projects are generated by concern to improve the lives and well-being of the most marginal and excluded in society. Second, the research process, and the practice it generates, also operates within a broadly defined ‘social justice model’ by utilising ‘emancipatory’ and ‘empowering’ research methodologies.

Through the Institute colleagues organise annual conferences, academic seminars, research, scholarship and engagement with the wider community. This website offers an introduction to the Institute's work.
