Frequently Asked Questions

What is Erasmus?

Erasmus is the European Commission funded scheme to promote mobility of students (and staff) from higher education institutions within Europe to other European countries. If you are interested in going to the US, Canada, Australia etc then this would not be classed as an Erasmus exchange. More information about the Erasmus scheme is available on the British Council website.

I would like to go to university in Florida, but notice you don't have a link there - would it still be possible for me to go and study there for a semester?

Since it is vital for us to be able to assure the quality of your time abroad and the level of service provided at the host institution, it is only possible for students to go abroad as part of their Liverpool Hope University degree course to one of our recognised partners. New agreements are being signed annually, so you may find that extra destinations are on offer by the time you come to Liverpool Hope. However it is unfortunately not generally possible to set up a new agreement to meet the demands of an individual student.

Do I get credit for going on Exchange?

Yes, the partner university will send us the results from your time abroad and these will be converted into UK grades and will count towards your final degree classification.

Are there any grants available?

Yes. There are also some independent organisations who offer a small number of grants and bursaries every year, such as the Rotary Club, BUTEX, BUNAC and the Singaporean DUO Fellowship Award. When we receive information about such schemes we will always pass it on to students nominated for exchange and would encourage them to apply. However we would caution against relying on receiving any additional funding as it is obviously not a guaranteed source of finance.

How many credits do I need to take?

You will need to replace 4 Liverpool Hope modules 60 credits for one semester study abroad and 120 credits for two semesters study abroad. For placements in Europe 1 ECTS credit is equivalent to 2 Hope credits, therefore you will need to select 30 ECTS per semester. For placements in North America 1 US credit is equivalent to 5 Hope credits therefore you will need to select 12 credits per semester.

Must I speak another language?

Some courses at European Universities, particularly in Scandinavian countries, The Netherlands and Malta, are taught in English, but where necessary, students can prepare for an exchange by taking language classes or learning through the EILC programme. For further details see

How do I find accommodation?

Accommodation is normally arranged by the host university and can be on campus or in private accommodation. For you time spent at Liverpool Hope there is limited accommodation in St Julies for students who are going on the exchange programme.

What do I need to do before I leave the host university?

Before you leave the host university please make sure you have requested your transcript to be sent to the Exchange Coordinator at Liverpool Hope.
