Genchao Liu, Hong Kong, BA Business Management

I came to the UK to study Business Management because the Education system in my home town wasn’t as high quality. I come from the Guang Dong province in Hong Kong and it was important for me to have the opportunity to engage with independent learning.

One of my friends had recently studied here and said the academic staff had been very friendly and supportive. When I came to visit the UK I looked at two institutions but chose Hope due to its small, friendly campus and the fact that I wasn’t one of many Chinese students and had ample opportunity to mix with UK students.

When I began my studies I found the tutors were very supportive especially in encouraging me to speak confidently in class. I now feel like part of a family and I have made many good friends with both international and local students – we all spent many hours in the 24 hour library before exams.

I got involved with the ‘Young Enterprise’ scheme when Sarah from the Business Gateway came to speak to my class. My friend and I initially had 4 or 5 ideas drawn from our own experiences of being an international student coming to the UK to study.  We completed market research and decided to establish ‘The Second Home’. The Second Home aims to solve problems faced by many international students when they come to the UK.  It isn’t possible to bring everything you need such as duvet, sheets and pillows due to restrictive airline baggage allowances.  This causes a problem when international students first arrive in the UK as they don’t know where to go to buy them. Our company provides a service to these students by offering them the chance to order a pack online before they leave so that when they arrive at the University these home comforts are waiting to welcome them.

Since starting up ‘The Second Home’, we have been submitted to the North West Regional finals for the Young Enterprise Start Up Programme and the University provided funding for me to be a delegate at the Accelerate Conference which allowed me to meet other Business people across the North West and pitch our ideas further.
