African Drumming Workshop with member of the River Niger Orchestra |
|
|
|
On Friday 20th
January, we were joined by Olu Olaseinde of the River Niger Orchestra who ran an
African drumming workshop for Hope music students. River Niger’s workshops and
performances explore World cultures through the specialist delivery of music,
visual arts, storytelling and drama. By offering new
learning opportunities through world arts and culture
they aim to inspire people’s creative potential.
During the workshop, students learnt about the
origins and history of African drumming, different variations of African music
and the artists involved, and about the instruments themselves. They had the
opportunity to listen to different types of African music then learn rhythms
and beats which they played alongside the extremely knowledgeable workshop
leaders. Students were encouraged to explore the drumming style and create
their own rhythms, and these were then combined with African singing and dance.
The session proved to be very interesting, enjoyable and educational, and
Liverpool Hope hope to welcome the River Niger Orchestra back again soon.

A Welcome to Hope's new Music Lecturers |
|
|
|
We have had the pleasure of welcoming two new members of staff to the Music department team. Laura Hamer and Alberto Sanna joined the department at the start of January. Having studied in Oxford and then Cardiff where she completed her PHD, Laura spent a year in Paris carrying out research before becoming a post-doctoral research assistant at the Birmingham Conservatoire. She then worked for the Open University as a fixed term lecturer in Music before moving to Liverpool Hope. Laura specialises in 19th and 20th century music, French music, women composers, and reception and criticism studies. Alberto Sanna is a violinist and musicologist who specialises in historical musicology, music theory and analysis, and performance. He trained at the Milan Conservatory as well as the Longy School of Music in Boston, and the University of Oxford, and has played with many orchestras around Europe. Alberto commented on how Liverpool is a great city for musicians as music is so important here. When asked about Liverpool Hope and his move here, Alberto stated: “I needed a more challenging and dynamic environment to work in. The history of the university is so recent and yet so driven - Hope has a vision!”

Throughout the festival, the music and ideas of Claude Debussy will be interspersed with contemporary instrumental, vocal and sonic art works.
