An International Conference to commemorate the Beatification of John Henry Cardinal Newman took place during 16-19th September 2010 at Liverpool Hope University This conference was arranged by Liverpool Hope University in association with The International Federation of Catholic Universities to coincide with the visit of His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI to the UK where he beatified John Henry Cardinal Newman in Birmingham on 19 September 2010. The four day conference saw academics from around the globe sharing their ideas on the continuing relevance of the work of John Henry Cardinal Newman. Speakers included Professor Mark Chapman (Oxford University), Fr. Frazer Mascarenhas, S.J. (St Xavier’s College, Mumbai), Dr Ian Ker (Oxford University) and Sr. Andrea Lee (St. Catherine University, St. Paul /Minneapolis, Minnesota). Professor Bart McGettrick, Dean of Education at Hope, said “The conference raised, for many people, the significance of religious dialogue which is exemplified at Liverpool Hope. This is likely to be an even more serious conversation for education in the years ahead. This was a truly stimulating event which did justice to Newman’s massive contribution to education. These were serious scholars of education reflecting on ideas which were ground-breaking in their day but many of which still hold good in the 21st century.”
