The University of Modena, Italy, welcomed Dr Belen Olmos Giupponi as a guest speaker at a conference commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome.

Liverpool Hope’s Interim Head of Law addressed the issue of the evolution of EU environmental law and current challenges, in response to questions posed by Green Party member Monica Frassoni.

Dr Giupponi said: “I was invited by Professor Marco Gestri, who holds the Chair in EU Law at the University of Modena.

“It was a great experience as I was invited as a relevant expert in the field and the conference was open not only to academics, but also to the wider community.”

Dr Giupponi also attended the State of the Union Conference, organised by the European University Institute in Florence, as an alumna and front-row discussant.

She said: “One of the main aims of the conference this year was to debate the implications of Brexit. High-level politicians and EU representatives, such as President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker, President of the European Parliament Antonio Tajani, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini and EU negotiator for Brexit Michel Barnier were discussing the current state of affairs and the future of the Brexit negotiations, particularly, the protection of citizens' rights.

“As a scholar, it was extremely important to have the opportunity to exchange viewpoints with high-level policy makers at this crucial moment.”
