The annual dinner of Liverpool Consular Corps was held at Hope, featuring representatives from across the globe.
Consuls from countries including, Romania, Hungary and Italy gathered at the University for the Black Tie event, which celebrates one of the oldest consular groups in the world.
Vice-Chancellor and Rector of Liverpool Hope University Professor Gerald Pillay addressed the attendees, discussing the importance of European collaboration and the internationalist perspective of the University.
He explained how in 2016, against the backdrop of Brexit, Hope was cementing its continental links through the creation of the European Institute.
Associate Professor Bryce Evans, Director of the European Institute, said: “Hosting the dinner provided the opportunity to foster stronger links between the University and the consular corps, including placements and internships for students. We are also keen to more closely involve the corps in the work of the European institute, through guest lectures and co-design.”
According to Liverpool Consular Corps, more than 40 countries at one time had consuls in Liverpool, but now the emphasis is on honorary consuls. These conduct strong programmes of contacts with their nationals, local and regional authorities, organise seminars and conferences and represent their Governments at special events.
