Geoff Main, a Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship PhD student in the Department of Geography and Environmental Science, travelled to London to present his multi-author paper at the Annual Conference of the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG).
Bringing together nearly 1,800 delegates from around the world, this conference is one of two large gatherings of geographers every year.
Written with his extended supervisory team from Liverpool Hope University, University of Liverpool and the University of Malta, Geoff’s paper is entitled; ‘The safest place on Earth’: The Hazard Exposure of the Maltese Islands.
The paper, which was submitted to the journal Natural Hazards earlier this year, was presented as part of a session entitled ‘Geographies of disaster, risk and fragility’.
Speaking about his experience at the conference, Geoff said: “It was a really great opportunity to present our research at such a prestigious event in the academic geography calendar. There were some really interesting and thought provoking discussions with other panel members, the Chair and members of the audience, both about our paper and my PhD research.
“Particularly being such an under-researched area, it was a great opportunity to put my name, and my research, out there, and to see what other academics within the discipline thought about my work.”
Chaired by Dr Gemma Sou from the University of Manchester, the session brought together various hazard researchers from the UK, Canada, Italy, the Netherlands and the US. Geoff’s paper, and his doctorate research, were well received by both the Chair and members of the audience.
