On Saturday 11th July, staff from the University’s estates and catering services took part in this year’s Coniston Challenge to raise money for Alder Hey Children’s Charity.

Andy Rice, Phil Brand, Chris Furlong, Dave Kerry, Craig Lowthian and Ronnie Murphy headed to Coniston in the Lake District for three gruelling challenges consisting of:

  • 3km kayak across Coniston Water
  • 10km hike to the summit of ‘The Old Man of Coniston’
  • 17km mountain bike ride through the Forest of Grizedale

Speaking ahead of the challenge, Andy said “We decided to take part in the event as we are aware that the Alder Hey hospital is moving site to a fantastic new location this year and now more than ever, they need help to maintain their status as one of the top children's hospitals in the country.

“As a city, we are extremely lucky to have amazing specialist hospitals on our doorstep and as scousers, we should do all we can to help in any way.”

Despite a few trips and falls, the team completed the challenge in 6 hours and 33 minutes and have raised an incredible £3,060 for Alder Hey Children’s Charity. Well done team!
