An end of year initiative saw 52 crates of food collected from halls of residence and donated to local charities.

The accommodation, estates and residential life teams worked together to encourage students departing the halls to donate non-perishable foodstuffs.

These were collated, sorted and then delivered to local organisations the Knowsley Big Project, the Whitechapel Centre and the Sisters of Charity.

Clothes, crockery, pots and pans were also collected and donated to the British Heart Foundation.

James Ellison, Director of Estates, said: "Not only has this initiative helped numerous individuals within our wider society, it has also helped to reduce domestic labour and waste handling costs. Items were donated on student departure, and we have redirected a large proportion of what would have been waste, away from landfill."
