Members of Liverpool Hope’s Women in Music Research Group presented a panel of papers at the First International Conference on Women’s Work in Music, at Bangor University.

The panel – entitled ‘Challenging Stereotypes through Female Creativity’ – was convened by Dr Laura Hamer, who also served upon the conference organising committee.

It brought together four eclectic papers from staff and postgraduate students, which showcased the breadth of Women in Music research taking place at the University.

Dr Hamer and Dr Mike Brocken presented their ongoing research into Mrs Wilf Hamer and Her Boys; Zaina Shihabi discussed perceptions of female composers in Middle Eastern society; Wendy Smith showcased her MA research on women electroacoustic composers challenging historic musical gender stereotypes through compositional outputs; and Dr Manuella Blackburn and the independent researcher Dr Brona Martin considered female composers and the sonic home.

Drs Hamer and Brocken will present an expanded version of their paper, which will consider the house dance band at the Grafton Rooms - one of Liverpool’s most famous ballrooms of the mid twentieth century - and their female band leader Mrs Wilf Hamer, in the Music Department’s Research Seminar Series on Wednesday 13th December 2017 at 4pm in CAP009. All are welcome to attend.
