Expert Comment: Surviving Beatles reunite at GrammysTuesday 28 January 2014
As Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr reunite at the Grammys Dr Mike Brocken, Director of Liverpool Hope's The Beatles, Popular Music and Society MA, looks at the group's ongoing appeal.
Paul and Ringo received their Grammy award for 'lifetime achievement'. The two of them appear together occasionally and they’re still good friends, as far as anyone can tell.
More interestingly, the historic rivalry between The Beatles and The Rolling Stones cropped up again, with Paul McCartney’s collaboration with the surviving members of Nirvana up against The Stones' Doom and Gloom. For those of us old enough to remember such things, it was very entertaining.
It’s telling that Paul received an award for this collaboration - he always works better with a partner; not only with John Lennon but also with Denny Laine, Elvis Costello and Youth. He’s a man who should always take advantage of working with someone else.
As far as I’m concerned, Paul’s partnership with other writers always produces something of great interest.
