Dr Janet Speake, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Geography at Liverpool Hope, looks at the World Urban Forum, taking place in Naples this week.
UN-Habitat’s agenda of working for a sustainable urban future was highlighted at the Rio +20 UN Conference on Sustainable Development in June 2012. It comes into popular focus again in Naples this week, as UN-Habitat’s World Urban Forum 6 convenes to discuss the Urban Future.
The forum is presented as a platform for open dialogue on different ways to create cities that are more sustainable, democratic, just and human. The World Urban Campaign will be featured, along with its new 'I’m a city changer' initiative which encourages active engagement to 'Be part of the change, be part of the solution, be a city changer'.
The campaign calls for the sharing of ideas and stories of urban life and transformation. For a year, since Liverpool was designated one of UN-Habitat’s 100 Global Exemplar Cities (and the only one in the UK), the city has profiled “Our Compelling Story: It’s Liverpool' including the work of the Rights and Humanity International Centre for Excellence, Women’s International Centre for Economic Development and the Global Entrepreneurship Congress, Liverpool, 2012.
The World Urban Forum provides the opportunity at the global-local interface to tell such stories, hear them and learn.
