Bogdan and Bedene win Liverpool Hope University International Tennis TournamentMonday 22 June 2015
The Liverpool Hope University International Tennis Tournament drew to a close this Sunday by crowing Ana Bogdan and Aljaz Bedene as winners.
Ana Bogdan beat Elena Bogdan to take the Women’s Final trophy in a thrilling match, which Ana Bogdan won 6-3, 7-6 (7-5).
Aljaz Bedene was crowned Men’s champion after winning a super tiebreak 13-11 against Paulo Andujar earlier in the week. The tournament, which took a round robin format, saw Pablo Andujar and Aljaz Bedene tied with two wins and one loss. As a result, the new Brit was crowned champion.
The Tournament was the first win for Bedene since becoming a British citizen earlier this year. He is second only to Andy Murray in the UK rankings. While top 100 ATP players traditionally head to the Queen’s Club to prepare for Wimbledon, Bedene decided to head north to Liverpool Hope University International Tennis Tournament.
Speaking after his victory, Bedene said “I am very proud to be a winner at Liverpool Hope University International Tennis Tournament. It’s been a fantastic event and I am now feeling much more confident for Wimbledon.”
In the Legend´s Doubles, Mansour Bahrami and Jeremy Bates beat Richard Krajicek and Peter McNamara 8-4.
Liverpool Hope students, staff and alumni also played for the crowds in Pro-Am games, and students and staff also spoke to visitors to the tournament about courses in the School of Health Sciences including Sports Science.
