Distinguished Lecture Series to examine future of Social Work in the UK

0127 Dr Michael Lavalette Monday 3 October 2016

The future of social work in the UK and how it contributes to the world around us will be discussed in a series of new distinguished lectures at Liverpool Hope University.

Beginning on Wednesday 5th October, the series will bring some of the leading social work practitioners and academics in the country to Liverpool Hope. Speakers include Professor Brid Featherstone (University of Huddersfield),  Professor Iain Ferguson (University of West Scotland) and Professor Chris Jones (University of Liverpool).

The challenging set of lectures will force us to confront social work’s current limits and consider future possibilities. Topics under the microscope will include social work provision for children, adults and refugees; mental health; learning disabilities; social work practice; oppression and social work education.

The lectures are free and open to all.

The lectures are hosted by Liverpool Hope’s Department of Social Work, Care and Justice, which is one of the newest Departments in the University, but also one of the largest. The Department has a strong commitment to issues of social justice, and radical social work which shapes both its research and teaching. It is currently part of a €2.7 million EU project exploring the impact of austerity on mental health, with the aim of developing a Europe-wide social investment strategy. Their report will be published in October.

The first lecture will be delivered by Professor Michael Lavalette from Liverpool Hope University who will ask ‘What is the future for social work?’

All lectures will take place at 5.30pm in the EDEN Lecture Theatre, Liverpool Hope University, Hope Park, Liverpool L16 9JD. Refreshments will be served at 5pm.

The lectures are free and open to all.  If you would like to attend, please RSVP to events@hope.ac.uk or 0151 291 3050
