Double-Deca Dave prepares for ironman challenge with help from Liverpool Hope

Deca Dave Tuesday 5 July 2016

Dave Clamp, winner of the Deca Ultra Triathlon World Challenge (a task which involves 10 times the traditional ironman distance in 10 days) visited Liverpool Hope University this week as he prepares to take on his next test - 20 ironman challenges in 20 days.

Dave, from Oakmere in Cheshire, will compete non-stop in the Double Deca Ultra Triathlon Challenge in Switzerland from Sunday 14th August until Friday 2nd September. Competitors will swim 2.4 miles, cycle 112 miles and run 26.2 miles each day for 20 days.

Dave is dedicating his Double-Deca attempt to Clive Reading, a member of his triathlon club who died in January of this year. Dave will be raising funds for East Cheshire Hospice and Brain Tumour Research in Clive’s memory.

This week, Dave was tested by Liverpool Hope University Physiologist Dr Simon Marwood. Dr Marwood examined the size and function of Dave’s his heart, his capacity to oxidise fat as a source of fuel, and his maximal capacity to utilise oxygen (VO2max). After looking at the test results, Dr Marwood will provide Dave with advice and expertise to help him throughout his training period.

Dave was accompanied to Liverpool Hope by Sue McAuliffe, who will be his support crew in Switzerland and primarily responsible for race nutrition. Sue undertook her own first half-ironman recently.

Dave has been competing in Triathlons for the past 33 years – including five deca-triathlons, nine triple-triathlons, six double triathlons and numerous single competitions. He has also previously completed a 1357 mile charity run from London to Rome.

Dave said: “I’m really looking forward to the challenge, and it makes me even more proud to be doing it in memory of Clive. I have been in touch with Clive’s family and they are thrilled that we are raising money for East Cheshire Hospice and Brain Tumour Research. I have been competing for 33 years, but you can always learn something new about yourself and what you can do to aid your performance, so I am delighted to be getting some advice from Simon with all of his expertise.”

Dr Simon Marwood said: “We are very excited to invite Dave to Liverpool Hope, to help us understand the physiology needed to take on this massive challenge. We will be using the latest equipment available in our new Health Sciences building, and we will be advising Dave throughout the process. The key things we will look at helping Dave with are his ability to utilise fat as a fuel and his nutritional plan during the event. It is a fantastic cause and we are delighted to be involved.”
