Dr Lyndon Way to speak at CTM Festival for Adventurous Music and Art

Dr Lyndon Way CTM Thursday 11 January 2018

Lecturer in Media and Communication Dr Lyndon Way has been invited to be a guest speaker at CTM experimental music festival in Berlin.

He will present ‘Power, pop and politics in Turkey’, reflecting on his most recent research. The presentation considers relations between popular music, politics and power. Politics in popular music is not restricted simply to music that is subversive, but also used by those with power.

This is revealed through case studies of political musical advertisements produced by mainstream political parties, including Turkey’s President Erdogan and his party, as well as popular music videos that resist moves by this right wing conservative government.

Dr Way’s presentation is part of an academic enquiry into ‘Ideology and Musical Resistance’ which includes Robin James (from the Beta Band), Christina Moreno Almeida (Kings College London) and Melanie Schiller (Groningen University).

The CTM Festival is a ‘Festival for Adventurous Music and Art’. Founded in 1999, it is dedicated to contemporary electronic, digital and experimental music, as well as the diverse range of artistic activities in the context of sound and club cultures.

CTM 2018’s theme is ‘Turmoil’, examining music and sound that deals with the growing strain of living in a world in turmoil.

The presentation Dr Way will present appears in published form in his latest book Popular Music and Multimodal Critical Discourse Studies: Ideology, Control, and Resistance in Turkey Since 2002.
