Dr Sonja Tiernan’s research inspires address by Irish President

Sonja Tiernan Tuesday 18 October 2016

Research by Dr Sonja Tiernan, Acting Head of History and Politics, inspired a public address by the President of Ireland Michael D. Higgins.

Speaking at the Trade Union Congress (TUC) headquarters in London, the President presented a lecture on Eva Gore-Booth, which was based on the writings of Dr Tiernan.

In 2012, Dr Tiernan officially presented a copy of her monograph, Eva Gore-Booth: An image of such politics, to President Higgins. At the TUC event she officially presented her recent 2015 volume of Gore-Booth's political writings to President Higgins.

The President described how he is “indebted” to this work and based his talk on both publications. The speech has been published on the presidential website and is available here.

President Higgins quoted numerous passages from Dr Tiernan's work and from Gore-Booth's political writings published in her latest volume. At a meeting afterwards, President Higgins and the Irish Ambassador in London Daniel Mulhall, agreed to help secure a blue plaque for Gore-Booth on her previous homes in Manchester and London. Dr Tiernan’s next volume on Eva Gore-Booth's poetry will be published soon.

Dr Tiernan was interviewed by Jenni Murray on BBC Woman's Hour about Eva Gore-Booth in the lead up to the Presidential address. The interview is available here (35 mins in).
