Hope radio students meet South African broadcaster Keith du Plessis
Thursday 25 October 2012
Students studying for Liverpool Hope's PGDip Radio and Online Journalism enjoyed a seminar with veteran South African broadcaster Keith du Plessis on Tuesday 22nd October.
Keith (pictured, left, with course tutor Gary Morrisroe), broadast on the SABC radio station from 1988-95 and talked to students about what it was like to work for the state broadcaster during the dying days of Apartheid, release from prison of Nelson Mandela and South Africa's subsequent democratic elections.
Keith ended the session by saying to the students present: 'Radio, when it works, is the most amazing medium, and the most trustworthy medium.
'My challenge to you is to be the very best journalists you can be in whichever sphere you work in and to do it with conviction and a sense of destiny, calling and purpose.
'You have the ability to help people, through the information you give them. You have the ability to inform people, and also to educate them.'
