Hope remembers the late Jan Cardinal KorecWednesday 28 October 2015
With great sorrow, we must announce that Jan Cardinal Korec passed away on Saturday 24th October 2015.
In 2014, Liverpool Hope University rewarded Jan Cardinal Korec with an honorary doctorate for his lifelong dedication to the faith and freedom. Professor of Environmental Science Peter Siska has written this tribute:
Jan Cardinal Korec was one of the leading figures of the twentieth century in his fight for freedom and democracy behind the Iron Curtain. While leading the underground Church in Slovakia for four decades, he experienced persecution, imprisonment, many years of manual labour, as well as attempts to assassinate him.
In spite of all these difficulties, his faith remained unshaken. He raised generations of young people and wrote hundreds of books along with numerous articles. Finally, in 1991, he was elevated to Cardinal by Pope John Paul II. I
He will be missed by many, but his life can best be described as Saint Paul stated in Second Timothy, chapter 4, verse 7: I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful. This applies to Cardinal Korec whose example of heroism will remain in history.
