Media and Communication students broadcast live debateThursday 3 March 2016
Liverpool influencers debated hot topics affecting students and the wider British society, in a live debate broadcast by Media and Communication students on THIS Radio.
The debate took on a Question Time format, with students given the opportunity to put questions to the floor.
Sitting on the panel were Luciana Berger, Member of Parliament for Wavertree and the Labour Party’s Shadow Minister for Mental Health; Tony Mulhearn, Labour Party activist who stood for election in Crosby, served on Liverpool City Council and stood as the TUSC candidate in the 2012 Liverpool Mayoral Election; Dr Joe Greener, Lecturer in Social Policy with a research interest in mental wellbeing; and Angela Samata, mental health campaigner and documentary maker who won Merseyside Woman of the Year 2015.
Amongst the topics discussed were tuition fees, the EU referendum and mental health provision within the NHS.
THIS Radio presenter Derrie Thickett, who took on the role of chair, said: “The debate was a wonderful opportunity for me to utilise the skills I have acquired while working with THIS radio. It was a great honour to host the panellists and was a valuable insight to the learning curve ahead of me.”
Kyran Sharpe, produced the Question Time radio show, while Caitlin Duggan operated THIS Radio’s social media accounts to engage listeners through tweets and blogs.
Caitlin said: “The opportunity to engage and interact with the station’s listeners gave me industry experience of communicating in synchronous time in a real marketing environment.”
All three Media and Communication students are working with THIS Radio as part of their SALA projects, and the Question Time debate was co-hosted by the Students’ Union and THIS Radio.
