One swing at a time for Uganda

Golf tournament for 'One Brick at a Time' Monday 24 September 2012

The corporate world turned out in strength on Thursday 13th September to support One Brick at a Time, a partnership project led by Chester and District Housing Trust (CDHT), Liverpool Hope University, VMM and Halton Housing Trust.

Nineteen golfing teams came together, mainly from the housing and construction sectors, and in an afternoon and evening event raised just under £5,000 by taking part in the annual One Brick at a Time Golf Gala.

The event, which is organised mainly by Tweeds Consultants, took place in West Derby Golf Club and regardless of the difficult times the construction industry is going through, a number of private companies dedicated their time, golfing skill and money to support a worthy cause.

One Brick at a Time sends construction workers to Fort Portal in Western Uganda to work alongside Ugandan trainees to construct and refurbish schools. The work they undertake saves Ugandan children’s lives simply by concreting floors and putting shutters on the windows, two measures which stop life-threatening diseases.

The Golf Gala now serves as an important part of the project’s funding strategy and both CDHT and Liverpool Hope thank Tweeds, Lovell, Rowlinson and all the other companies for supporting the initiative.

VMM representative Van Garber, who attended the evening event stated, "This is a tremendously successful event. The golf and dinner is enjoyed by all at a great venue and everyone realises that their involvement with OBAAT is making a positive impact to 100's of children in Uganda."
