Suffrage conference to feature talk by Associate Professor Sonja TiernanFriday 24 November 2017
Associate Professor Sonja Tiernan, Head of History & Politics, has been invited to address a conference to mark the centenary of female suffrage and the extension of male suffrage in 1918.
This conference, produced in partnership with the Houses of the Oireachtas – the Irish Parliament - and the Royal Irish Academy, critically reflects upon this history, while also celebrating the lives and experiences of women in Irish politics, past and present.
Next year will mark 100 years since the commencement of the Representation of the People Act 1918 and the Parliament (Qualification of Women) Act 1918, which allowed women to stand for and vote in general elections.
Sonja will deliver a talk on The inconvenience of suffrage in Irish nationalist and labour movements, which will be chaired by Catherine Martin, TD.
