Research Dedicated to the Study of Anomalous or ‘Psychic’ Experiences
The Parapsychology Research Group is dedicated to the study of anomalous or ‘psychic’ experiences. Such experiences appear to reflect methods of communication and /or mind-matter interaction that are not fully understood within the current scientific framework.
Extra-Sensory Perception (ESP)
Extra-sensory perception (ESP) experiences can be varied and may include experiences suggestive of telepathy, clairvoyance or precognition. Telepathic experiences suggest an ability for individuals to communicate with each other when other means of communication are ruled out. Clairvoyance experiences suggest an ability to acquire information directly from hidden sources. Precognitive experiences suggest an ability to acquire information from sources that are in the future. Experiences suggestive of psychokinesis (PK) appear to reflect the direct interaction between mental intentions and the physical environment. Due to the difficulties associated with distinguishing ostensible ESP and PK effects, parapsychologists typically use the less value-laden term psi (the Greek letter ) to refer to these kinds of ‘psychic’ experiences.
Human Personality or Consciousness
Other experiences studied by the group include experiences that suggest that human personality or consciousness may exist outside of a physical body. For example, members of the group study out-of-body experiences, mediumship phenomena, and haunting phenomena.
Phenomenological Research and Assessing Psychic Claims
Based within Psychology, members of The Parapsychology Research Group are involved in experimental research, phenomenological research, assessing strong psychic claims, and field investigations. In all aspects of our work, we adopt a balanced and open-minded approach that does not pre-suppose whether ‘psychic’ experiences may be best explained within currently understood scientific terms or whether science needs to be extended to explain such experiences.
