Overview

The PGCE (Secondary) Performing Arts course at Liverpool Hope is unique in the UK. It aims to equip you with the knowledge and skills to teach Performing Arts and Dance or Drama as specialist subjects in secondary schools. The Legacy of Liverpool’s European Capital of Culture status in 2008 adds another dimension to your studying experience. In the most recent Ofsted inspection, all aspects of provision in PGCE (Secondary) Performing Arts were judged to be ‘Outstanding’.

Curriculum

Through Liverpool Hope’s well-established partnerships with schools in the region, you will be able to gain experience of teaching Performing Arts plus Dance or Drama across the 11–18 age group and across a wide range of student ability. Two different schools are used to ensure a contrasting experience and a number of placements are offered in schools with Performing Arts status.

Experience

You will be supported by a team of committed tutors who have worked in a range of educational environments. You will follow a programme of study which addresses the design and content of the Performing Arts, Dance and Drama curricula, in addition to general education issues such as classroom management and teaching and learning strategies. You will have the opportunity to combine your performance and teaching skills in special projects ranging from interactive arts days to sixth-form masterclasses.

Entry Requirements

Essential:

Grade C in English and Mathematics at GCSE (or equivalent)

First degree (usually 2.1 or above) incorporating at least 50% Performing Arts or equivalent

Experience of observation in a mainstream secondary state school

Knowledge of the Performing Arts curriculum

The ability to articulate views on the principles and practice of education particularly as it relates to teaching of Performing Arts

The ability to communicate clearly, fluently and accurately in spoken and written Standard English

It is a government requirement that you take the numeracy and literacy skills tests as part of the application process. You must ensure you have passed them both before the start of the course, please click here for further information.

Desirable:

A’level Performing Arts or equivalent

Significant school-based experience, e.g. extended attachment or work as a teaching assistant

If invited for interview, all candidates will undertake a short literacy test. Any offer of a place on the programme is made conditional on satisfactory Enhanced Disclosure from the Criminal Records Bureau and a satisfactory Fitness to Teach Declaration.
