2009 ENTRY
A one-year part-time programme which can be taken
as a free-standing programme worth 60 credits at level M, or as part of
the MAS in Religion & Society and Christian Theology or as part of the MA in Eductaion.
The course will support chaplains employed (or considering employment) in schools, colleges
and universities in the task of integrating Christian principles and
concepts into their professional responsibilities. An sudit of needs and skills will be carried out at the beginning of the course to enable you to focus on the most relevant context.
Study details/ module information
There are two 30-credit modules which are taken consecutively:
1. Contexts for Educational Chaplaincy
This module will
focus on the priorities, opportunities, purposes, constraints and other
features of the various contexts – schools, colleges and universities –
in which educational chaplains work in the UK, taking account of any
facet of the relationship that exists between educational institutions
and the Christian churches.
2. Skills, Knowledge, Understanding & Values for Educational Chaplaincy
This
module equips you to interpret theological and educational thinkers and practitioners,
and apply insights from these to your understanding and practice of the role of
chaplain, enabling you to differentiate between effective and ineffective
performance in the role. It will take account of the skills needed by chaplains
in promoting the spiritual development of pupils/students and staff, and cover
relevant areas of knowledge and understanding.
Teaching/Learning & Assessment
You will experience a range of teaching methodologies,
including lecturer input, seminar participation, individual personal tuition
and discussion with other students. Teaching and learning methods will be
adapted to match pre-existing needs, skills and contexts of, what is expected
to be, a heterogeneous student cohort.
Course
assessment will be of written submissions and interactive presentations.
Research Environment
The programme benefits from the thriving research environments of both the Education Deanery and the Theology & Religious Studies Department. Current research areas include: relationships
between institutional effectiveness and community; relationship between
spirituality and scholarship; Catholic intellectual tradition; Catholic
modernism; citizenship; evangelisation and mission; pastoral theology; Christian
education; school effectiveness and performance.
Career Opportunities
For
some students it will provide preliminary training for chaplaincy, while for
others it will offer advanced (and accredited) continuing professional
development. Appropriate focus will be on the ecclesial tradition in which you
are working (or plan to work) and how worship may be developed, making it
accessible to, and meaningful for, the whole educational community.
