2010 ENTRY

This inter-disciplinary programme has beenintroduced in response to recent government initiatives and services forchildren and young people. It is underpinned by the philosophy of  ‘Every Child Matters’ along with a children’srights agenda and thus brings together a wide range of services and academic disciplinesall of  which have relevance for workingwith and  for children and young people

Theprogramme team (Dr Anne-Marie Smith, Sue-Kay Flowers, Pat Hughes and Dr Wendy Bignold) have extensive professional experience of working with childrenand young people in a range of settings including social care, youth justice,health, counselling and education.  Theyhave strong links with these services in communities throughout Merseyside andbeyond, and many professional colleagues contribute to the programme as guestlecturers.

 

Study Details

 

The programme aims to foster and extend inter-disciplinaryworking as well as enhancing professionalexperience and developing skills in research, evaluation and evidence informedpractice.  It includes assessed taught modules and supervised originalresearch.   The full Masters award requires you to gain 180credits made up in the following manner.

 

Threecompulsory modules each worth 30 credits:

 

  • Children and Young People:  Influences and  Issues;
  • Children’s Rights, Participation and Welfare, and
  • Integrating Services for Children and Young People 

 

Afurther 30 credits chosen from a combination of three optional 15 creditmodules which will allow you to specialise in a particular areas of interest,for example:

 

  • Negotiated work-based learning: children and  young people
  • Education provision  for 14-19 year olds
  • Counselling children and young people.

 

Adissertation, worth 60 credits in which you will explore a question or issue whichis of  particular interest to you, underthe supervision of a member of the multi-disciplinary post-graduate team.

 

Career Opportunities 

 

The course offerscontinuous professional development for those working with children andyoung people as well as opening up opportunities for new graduates who wish towork in this area.  It therefore will be of particular relevance forthose employed in or seeking employment in child health and welfare, socialwork, social policy, juvenile justice, youth and community work andeducation. 

 

 Research environment

The Deaneryhas a record of research and publications in children’s rights, youth participationand welfare, marginalised young people and family and society.  To support you throughout your study a programmeof research training and seminars led by other graduate students, academictutors, professors and visiting professors in subjects related to children andyoung people will be available throughout your period of study with us.

Award: MA in Children & Young people in Society

Mode of study: Full-time or part-time

Duration: 12-15 months (full-time); 24-36 months (part-time)

Study pattern: September/January entry

Entry criteria: Arelevant first degree such as Early Childhood Studies, Sociology or Childhood &Youth Studies; and experience at an appropriate level in a relevant setting.
