2009 ENTRY

A unique and innovative programme which will further your knowledge and understanding of current debates in relation to children’s rights and services

The programme aims to identify new ways of responding to the needs of children and young people through working collaboratively with other practitioners. It is the only programme of its kind available in the Liverpool area. It will enhance your professional profile by demonstrating your commitment to innovative practice and lifelong learning.

Study Details

Within this multi-disciplinary course you will develop a range of strategic management and critical and analytical skills, as well as gaining an awareness of the context in which services for children and young people are currently delivered. Through the programme’s community links and partnerships you will increase your knowledge of innovative practice in the sector and be encouraged to develop your own support networks. This will enable you to share good practice with fellow professionals and provide opportunities for you to undertake your own future research. You will be encouraged to develop your ICT skills, and there are opportunities for online learning. Throughout the course you will be encouraged to engage in self-reflection, to consider how you can improve your current practice and form effective partnerships.

The programme team consists of Sue-Kay Flowers (programme leader), Pat Hughes and Professors Peter Clough and Rosemary Kilpatrick.  Together they have extensive experience in social care, youth justice and educational settings and thus the course offers a multi-disciplinary approach to learning.  A range of experienced practitioners and academics also will be invited to contribute to the programme as guest speakers.

Career Opportunities

The course offers continuous professional development for those working with children and young people as well as opening up opportunities for new graduates who wish to work in this area.  It therefore will be of particular relevance for those employed in or seeking employment in child health and welfare, social work, social policy, juvenile justice, youth and community work and education.

Research environment

The research interests of the programme team are reflected in the taught modules, and include children’s rights, participation and welfare, and integrating children’s and young people’s services.
