2009 ENTRY This is a one-year part-time accredited course of continuing professional development to support serving teachers relate the Christian mission to key aspects of their professional policy and practice. It can also be taken, in a non-accredited form, as advanced in-service training.
Study Details/Module InformationThe course comprises four integrated 15-credit M level modules. It can be taken as a stand-alone programme worth 60 credits at M level, or as Part One (worth 60 credits) of the MA in Religion & Society, Christian Theology or Education.
Below is a summary of each module’s content.
1) Foundations of Christian Education • Changing contexts for Christian education and church schools • Church teaching and guidance documents on education • Principles and themes within a Christian philosophy of education • Organisation, structure, key agencies, and support mechanisms for church schools • Internal and external challenges to the mission of church schools
2) Mission into Practice • Application of Christian mission to: – staff management, – curriculum, learning and teaching, – building communities, – promoting and assessing quality.
3) Spiritual Leadership and Development • Perspectives on the challenges facing spiritual leadership in schools • Promoting the spiritual development of children/young people • Focus on chosen spiritual writer/resources
4) Theological Perspectives for Christian Educators • The nature, scope and types of theology and their bearing on the work of Christian educators and on school life • Exploring the educational relevance of developments in a chosen area of theology or of the work of a selected theologian • Applying theological insights/resources to school-based issues/problems
Teaching/Learning & AssessmentThere will be a range of teaching methodologies, including lecturer input, seminar participation and individual personal tuition. Course assessment will be of written submissions and interactive presentations.
Research EnvironmentThe programme benefits from the thriving reserahc environments of both the Eductaion Deanery and the Theology & Religious Studies Department. Current research areas include: relationships between institutional effectiveness and community; relationship between spirituality and scholarship; Catholic intellectual tradition; Catholic modernism; citizenship; evangelisation and mission; pastoral theology; Christian education; school effectiveness and performance.
Career OpportunitiesThe course is of value for all those who work in Church schools, enabling them to have a more explicit understanding of, and ability to provide, a Christian education in Church schools. It is especially relevant for senior teachers and leaders in Christian schools or those preparing for such roles.
